Sins of the Past
Approximately 30 years Y.A.E., Maria and Francis Grayson lived in an expansive barrio in southeast Barcelona. Both had lived here all their lives, been married since before the cataclysm, and had stayed in their home city through all the trials and tribulations that were forced on them. Now in their 60s, they led quiet lives, kept a private garden on the patio of their tiny flat, and bothered no one.
For years Maria showed signs of being a Genetic Alien (G.A.) in that, in small ways, she could move and manipulate things with her mind. Unknown to them, G.A.s were becoming more and more common in the world, sometimes physically mutated into aberrant forms, or sometimes, like in Maria’s case, psychically mutated to be able to manipulate what later on came to be known as the Force. In their blissful ignorance the couple merely looked at Maria’s new powers as a gift from God and continued on. Maria would use her gift to do small things around the house; to stir a stew, or to pluck weeds from her small garden. Eventually her powers became nothing more frightening or strange than eating or breathing to them. That is, until one fateful day when the looters broke in.
The Graysons had always been careful to never draw much attention to themselves, and especially to where they lived; they had survived the lawless times this way, and although the streets were much safer now, they could still be dangerous. It was Maria’s birthday though, and from his vantage point on the patio Francis had seen a beautiful bunch of wild flowers growing in a patch of cracked, sunlit ground not too far from the house. He decided to take a risk and worked his way slowly down the ruined staircase of their flat and out the rubble-hidden doorway and down the street to carefully scoop up the flowers for transplant into their garden. He thought he was careful, but a couple of young, dangerous thugs caught sight of him and decided to follow him back to his home in hopes of scoring some food or loot to barter.
Francis made his way back up to his home, oblivious of the two following stealthily behind him. When he reached the door the strangers lunged forward, kicking it open wide and spilling Francis out on the floor where his hip snapped like a twig. His roar of pain woke up Maria who had been taking a nap. She ran into the kitchen to see the bulky silhouettes of two men standing over her precious husband of 40 years. Both the men were G.A.s of the same “breed”, having deep blue skin and red eyes that seemed to glow in the slanting shadows of the afternoon. One of them reached a hand out and made a sharp jerking motion; Maria could instinctively feel that he was using the Force, could almost see the energy stretch out from his open hand and encapsulate Francis’ neck. In the silence, a sharp crack resounded through the open doorway and echoed in the stairwell as her husband’s neck broke. She fell to her knees, her consciousness torn violently away in shock and disbelief.
Moments later she came to as pain shot through her body. There was a bulk on top of her, a rank, heavy thing moving against her urgently. The pain consumed her again as, belatedly, she realized she was being raped. Frantically she struggled, moving her head side to side, eyes wide and panicked. To her left she saw her husbands body, his face close to hers, contorted into a rictus of fear and pain, his neck twisted at an odd angle. Above him the other thug crouched, checking Francis’ pockets and clothing for hidden loot. In a moment that seemed to stretch out forever, Maria’s anger blossomed like a deadly flower. They could do whatever they wanted with her, but they would never, ever touch her husband’s body again. Her mind stretched, reaching, grasping for the Force. She gathered all of her rage and pain into her, and the power came with it, filling her with righteous wrath. She expelled her held breath, and everything around her crumbled.
The blast of Force radiated out from her faster than sound, instantly disintegrating her, the thugs, and her entire building and the buildings in the immediate vicinity in the blink of an eye. Outward the wave still stretched, flattening and decimating buildings, trees, and people within a 5 mile radius, effectively destroying the entire city of Barcelona to the last man. After 30 years of hanging on to civilization, the town was finally, and fatally, destroyed. Everyone in the entire country who possessed these new found psychic powers felt the outburst of power and emotion, and some even further outside than that.
The blast drew the attention of scientists that were studying the phenomena of psychic powers; evidence gathered from the site combined with the sheer sensationalism of the event forced societies and governments to finally admit to the existence of what quickly became know as “The Force.”
